Why do I start the novel with this World War I sence, even though the story does not return to this period until near the end of the book?\
These 5 1/2 pages are all in italics. Why? Does it work for you as a reader or not? Did you even notice?
On pg. v, Capt. Kurt Radtke’s thoughts drift back to the “stump land around his wife’s hometown back in Northern Michigan.” What are the connections that Kurt (or you as the reader) make between the decimated No Man’s Land before his eyes and the logged over lands back home?
